Martha Derda
2009 Ward 5 Candidate for Broomfield City Council

Paul and Martha Derda
My family and I moved to Broomfield in 1978.   After living in Texas, North Carolina, Kansas, and Illinois, I knew that I had found where I wanted to live for a long time and we have enjoyed every minute of being here.   We came here from Schaumburg, Illinois where I had been a teacher and coach at West Leyden High School in Northlake, Illinois.   Paul was hired as Director of Parks and Recreation for the City of Broomfield and I immediately coached the Girl's Swim Team at Broomfield High School and worked for a dentist part time.  I also coached the Boulder Aquateens, a synchronized swim team sponsored by the City of Boulder.   Previously in Illinois I had coached competitive swimming and diving not only at West Leyden H.S., but started a synchronized swim team at the Schaumburg Park District. In 1990 I became the Recreation Supervisor specializing in Aquatics for the City of Brighton.  Then in 1995 was hired by the City of Lafayette as a Supervisor of Cultural, Teen, Tiny Tots, and Fitness programs.  I retired in 2001 from the City of Lafayette.

I wish to become a Council Member representing Ward 5, because I have lived in a  Municipal Government family my whole life.  You see, my father was a Director of Parks and Recreation in the cities of:  Waco, Texas, Charlotte, North Carolina, and Topeka, Kansas.   He was President of the American Recreation Society when it merged with the National Recreation and Parks Association in 1961.   I feel that I will bring a unique perspective to the Council because of the experience I have had with other cities.

Because I grew up in a service - oriented household, I have always been very community - minded and spent lots of time with community involvement.   I believe that I am a good listener and am loyal to the causes that I have always worked for.   I have always felt that I was well represented by the Council members of Ward 4, but now I live in Ward 5.    This is the perfect time for me to "jump in!!!!"
